Delancey
It’s pretty obvious I’m a fan of good food. I understand and appreciate what it takes to prepare amazing gourmet meals with obscure and special ingredients, and I don’t mind paying for meals like that every once in a while. But to be honest? I’d rather spend that money on the more precious and longer-lasting things in life. Like shoes. Or, if you’re reading Mom, books. So when I find a gem with excellent food at reasonable prices, I’m all over that like red on a Louboutin.
I’d driven past Delancey about a hundred times on my way through Hollywood, as I’m sure a lot of you Angelenos have. Tucked away on Sunset between the Silver Lake hub and the Hollywood bar scene, it’s advertised as an Italian cafe/pizzeria… But don’t be fooled. There is some seriously scrumptious Italian cooking going on here. And it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.
First of all, there are 18 fabulous pizzas to choose from, with toppings like mozzarella and meatballs, or wild mushrooms with truffle butter and a fried egg. And if you’re asking me, the only thing better than pizza is pizza with a fried egg on it. (Deep fry that fried egg, and I’ll marry you.)
We decided to do sharezies so we could try a bunch of things, and after some suggestions from our lovely waiter, we went with the following:
- heavenly, juicy beef/pork/ricotta meatballs with arrabiata sauce and grilled bread for dipping
- bruschetta with dates, prosciutto, goat cheese, and a sweet and syrupy balsamic drizzle
- even more bruschetta, this time topped with smoky roasted tomatoes and ricotta salata
- papardelle with pork “sugo” (kind of like a pork bolognese, creamy tomato zesty deliciousness), chili, and fennel
- penne with a vodka tomato cream sauce and thick sliced Italian sausage
- and, because it was on the menu and I am me, spaghetti carbonara, loaded with thick chunks of bacon, tons of parmesan cheese, and a douse of black pepper
Everything. Was. Perfect.
And bonus? Each generous portion was $14 or less. Worth every penny, friends.
How is this place not packed to the rafters with a line up around the block?! How am I not there right now, eating that pork sugo with a vengeance?!
Bye!

I can’t believe the prices! Living in DC has put a major damper on my going out since most places here are crazy expensive. I’d love to find somewhere like that.
Mar 16, 2011 @ 19:10:10
I am so tickled with your blog.
In part because I love to live vicariously through your well-described eating experiences.
But, in large part because my son will be moving out there in September to try to make his way into electrics for some film/video/entertainment company. However, at the beginning he will be living…let’s go with frugally. To have a list of yummy, but reasonable restaurants for him to have for the odd treat out will be a definite Good Thing To Have.

Good lord that looks tasty. You’re a bad influence!

I have never had this much fun reading about food! You have so much talent. But wait…no wine?
Mar 16, 2011 @ 20:19:37
Surely you mean “meets meatball”.
Mar 16, 2011 @ 20:20:27
I’ll be visiting a friend who lives in LA a few weeks from now…guess where we’re going for dinner my first night there!
Mar 16, 2011 @ 20:47:36
Fabulous, god I love sugo almost as much as carbonara. Wish the prices in Aust were as cheap! Main courses here go for around twice that.
Love also that you’re blogging about food and not pretending to be one of those virutuous types who exist on a diet of vitamin water and steamed fish. Life is way too short for that. Stay shiny.
Mar 16, 2011 @ 22:00:45
You went to an Italian restaurant wearing white?!?
Mar 16, 2011 @ 23:21:50
“Ever say to yourself, Man, I sure would love to see a pic of Jewel eating a meatball.”
I’ll be in my bunk.
Mar 16, 2011 @ 23:54:27
The pictures are great! Fried egg on pizza is something I’ve never tried but now I’m tempted. Very cool blog, keep it up! (BTW: huge fan of you in Firefly)

I don’t think half these places realize what an outstanding service you’re providing them. However,if I ever did own a eatery of my own there would be a sign out the front that says ‘Jewel Staite eats here for free, forever.’Because I mean seriously, your Jewel Staite, how can anybody not immediately gush over you ~~

That looks delicious!
There is also a great Italian place in Venice Beach called C&O Trattoria. They have the best garlic bread knots, and you can eat as much of them as you are able to stuff down. So good…

Hi Jewel. Fantastic blog post. The pictures tie it all together in a pretty bow.
Tell me… how do you stay trim with all the delicious goodness?
Mar 17, 2011 @ 08:44:23
Ok, it’s not a strawberry but …

Hi!
I have enjoyed reading your food blog for some time now. As I read the dish descriptions in this post I immediately got hungry. And then I saw the pictures (adding pictures to your blog was one of the best ideas of this millennium)… The food looks fantastic!!! I scrolled down picture by picture and every time it was like Homer Simpson: “Hmmmmmmmm, (insert name of amazingly delicious dish)”.
Please excuse my bad grammar. And keep writing about nice food.
Thomas (Germany)
P.S.: Next time we meet I will bring the picture of you and the meatballs to sign. So be prepared.

Excellent post!
@Ruth I live in DC as well. Do you get livingsocialdeals? Also, try Tomate in Dupont Circle! Prices are totally reasonable and the food is excellent!

Wow, amazing food for a great price. Do want!

Man I wish I lived where you do, you have all the great restaurants. We have exactly one five-star within 100 miles of Denver and it’s actually not that great although the service is spectacular. We did have an awesome Mongolian BBQ that just closed (to my great distress) and I’ve been to a fairly nice Italian place somewhere in Denver proper that was obscenely priced… but I just get jealous every time I read of your adventures. And hungry. I JUST ate.
Loving the photo with the meat ball.

Great review of what looks like an awesome dinner! Did you know that one half of the couple who owns Delancey has a great food blog, http://orangette.blogspot.com/? I’ve been reading her site for awhile now and she’s got some great recipes, as well as photos of the restaurant as it was being renovated for use.
Mar 18, 2011 @ 19:13:38
Oops, totally not the same Delancey. Oh well – what are the odds???

I can’t wait to get back to LA to eat at the restaurants you are blogging about. I don’t often go to Italian restaurants because being Italian I cook it all the time. It’s not that I get sick of eating it, it just seems that too many of them taste like a jar a Ragu pored over box pasta. Food is not worth eating if it is not yummy. I want to know that every extra pound that I have was cause by a delicious experience, not a Happy Meal.

Visiting my sis in Hollywood, so thought I’d finally give this place a try. It’s AMAZING! Thank you for adding it to the blog – we’re going again next week! Too yummy!!!
We started with the bruschetta topped with beratta, artichoke hearts, and toasted pistachios. Then we split a half & half pizza – the Fulton (artichoke hearts & mozarella) and the Horatio (with the fried egg). I wasn’t brave enough for the egg part, but the rest was so good! And we had dinner for $30! Awesome!
Thank you so much – now I’m re-reading everything to find another awesome place to go! Love this blog!!
